4 Options For Dealing With Your Old HVAC Unit

Posted on: 10 March 2022

If you are ready to get rid of your current HVAC unit and install a new unit, you need to have a recycling plan and properly dispose of your old unit. It is important to recycle your HVAC unit properly, in addition to containing valuable material that should be recycled, HVAC units may also contain harmful chemicals.

Dedicated Recycling Facility

If you live in a large urban area, there is a good chance that there will be dedicated recycling facilities in your area that are specifically designed for recycling large appliances, such as HVAC units, generators, refrigerators, and cooling towers.

Search and see if there are any specialized or equipment recycling facilities in your area. Some of these types of facilities will pick up your HVAC unit, and others will require you to drop it off yourself.

Landfill

If you have a dump or landfill in your area, you can take your HVAC unit there. You will need to load up the unit on your own into your vehicle, haul it to the landfill, and take it out. You can always check with the landfill to see if they have a special area for items that could contain harmful chemicals, such as an HVAC unit. Many dumps have a special recycling area for this type of equipment.

Donate

If your unit still works, but it just doesn't work for you, you can see if any charitable organizations will accept a donation of a still-working HVAC unit. Organizations that help people furnish homes or help low-income people build and repair homes are what you should look for.

Scrap Metal Company

Another option is to contact a scrap metal company. A scrap metal company may even come out and pick up your unit. They will gain value from the metal used in your HVAC unit and will know how to properly handle the unit to ensure that no hazardous chemicals get out in the process either. Your old unit could hold a lot of value for a scrap metal company. They will work to ensure that all parts within your unit are properly recycled and reused.

Don't just throw your HVAC unit in the trash; find a way to properly dispose of it to ensure that the materials inside the unit are correctly handled and disposed of. You can take it to a dedicated appliance recycling facility, drop it off at a landfill, donate it to an organization that can reuse it, or have a scrap metal company pick it up and recycle it. These are just a few of your options for properly disposing of your old HVAC unit and ensuring it is recycled and reused.
