Recycling is becoming more and more popular as people are becoming more and more eco-aware. When it comes to recycling programs, there are various ways that they can be managed. For example, they can be a single stream recycling program or a multi-stream program. But, what do those things mean and what are some of the benefits of each?
Single Stream Recycling
With a single stream recycling process, all the people doing the recycling have to do is to toss the recyclable item into a recycling bin. There's no need for them to have to separate it out any more than just whether or not it can be recycled. Once the recyclables reach the recycling center, all the items will be separated out into the various classifications so that they can be handled the way that they should be. There are a lot of benefits to this kind of recycling program. One of them is that it's much more likely to be used because people don't have to do as much work to do the recycling. They don't have to separate out the glass jars and the lids or sort out different kinds of paper. The consumers may not even have to rinse out food containers, which is one less step for the consumer. The fewer steps the consumer has to do, the more likely they are to use the program, which will help to keep recyclable waste out of the main waste stream.
Multi-stream Recycling
Multi-stream recycling is the more traditional kind of recycling. The items to be recycled must be separated out into their various component parts. That may just mean separating out glass, paper, and plastic, but some places may want to have more a more detailed breakdown. For example, that can include sorting out office paper from magazines from newsprint. While single stream recycling is becoming more common, not all areas have access to this kind of recycling. It also depends on what kind of processing center the recycling program uses. This may be a good starting point for a recycling program since it can always be turned into a single stream process.
